Probability Fact Sheet

The following is the fact sheet:

Course Name: Probability and Statistics Teacher: Miss Laurie Miller (lmiller@ransomeverglades.org) My Free Periods: 2 and 4

Welcome! I am looking forward to a successful year with you. The following is a brief description of the course, guidelines for the class, and grading procedures.

Course Description: This course consist of a variety of topics. A few of the main topics will be in the following areas: Sets and their operations, counting principles, definition of probability and probability axioms, conditional probability, Bayes Theorem, independence, Bernoulli Trials, discrete random variables, binomial random variable, normal approximation, frequency distributions, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, deviations, variance, standard scores, normal distributions, percentiles, box plots, sampling techniques, parameters, estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, statistical significance, and statistical error.

1. You are expected to conduct yourself in a manner that is respectful to your class-mates, teacher and yourself. Remember your conduct towards others reflects who you are ˆ make sure it is a positive image. If you choose to behave in an inappropriate fashion there will be consequences.

2. You need to come to class prepared everyday. This includes your spiral notebook, textbook, at least 2 pencils, calculator and a positive attitude. If you are not, points will be deducted from your homework grade.

3. All turned in assignments must be done in pencil, neatly on loose-leaf paper and pledged or they will not be accepted. Yes, this does include test and quizzes! Remember when you pledge your assignment that means you have not given your work to another to copy or copied another student‚s work.

4. Students are encouraged to discuss problems with other students in their class on assignments. However, a student may not copy another student‚s work and they may not give his/her work to be copied. If you discuss a problem with another student then you must notate who you talked with next to the problem. All problems turned in must be written up by yourself (even if you discuss one with someone else). All Test, Quizzes and Projects must be pledged.

Absences -

Planned excused absence ˆ (trip, athletic event, etc.) you are expected to make arrangements with me in a timely fashion (i.e. Two days notice) before you leave ˆ otherwise you will receive a 0 for the assignments - this includes quizzes.

Unplanned excused absence- (you don‚t know ahead of time ˆ i.e. sick, or family emergency) you are expected to see me as soon as you return to make arrangements about your make-up work. Typically, for an unplanned absence you receive two days for every day absent to make up the work. If you miss a quiz your test covering that material divided by 10 will become your quiz grade.

Unexcused absence - you will receive a zero on any missed assignments.

Remember that if you are tardy 4 times in one quarter then you receive a detention.

Homework/Assignments - Each day you must complete your homework assignment in a spiral notebook (along with your notes). Each assignment started on a new page with the assignment and date at the top. If your homework assignments are not in order you will not get credit for it. I will check your spiral notebook every day and on test days. Your homework grade will deducted for every missed assignment. You will also have some graded assignments each quarter. These will count for 100 points (110 possible).

Projects - You will have at least one project per quarter worth at least 50 points

Quizzes - You will have 11 quizzes per quarter ˆ 10 points each. They will occur every Friday/ last day of the week (with about 3 pop quizzes throughout the quarter). You will be allowed to drop your lowest quiz grade. Remember if you have a planned excused absence you must follow those guidelines or you will receive a 0. If you have an unplanned excused absence, the test covering that material will become your quiz grade. There will be no make-ups after the quiz is given to the class!

Test - You will have about 3 tests per quarter ˆ 100 points each. If you miss the day before a test you are not excused from taking the test. If you miss a test you must see me and make arrangements to take the test as soon as possible. If you know you are going to be absent you are responsible for seeing me before hand to make arrangements.

Quarter Evaluation: Participation - 25 points HW/Assignments - 100 points (110 points possible) Quizzes - 100 points (drop lowest quiz grade) Test - 300 points (3 Test per quarter typically) Projects - 50 points Total 550 points

To determine your grade ˆ take the points you have earned and divide by the total points possible.

On my part I will do my best to help you have a very successful school year. Please do not hesitate to ask for extra help if you need it.
