The following is the fact sheet:

Course Name: Pre-Calculus Teacher: Miss Laurie Miller My Free Periods: 2 and 4 E-Mail: lmiller@ransomeverglades.org Office: 211

Welcome! I am looking forward to a successful year with you. The following is a brief description of the course, guidelines for the class, and grading procedures.

Course Description: Pre-calculus is a rigorous course in problem-solving and analytical functions, stressing individual initiative and creativity in applying techniques. Some of the topics that will be covered: a review of linear and quadratic functions, polynomial functions and their roots, inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, conic sections, right triangle trigonometry, law of sines and cosines, and trigonometric equations and identities.

Goals: 1. Help students move toward independent learning 2. To build a strong foundation for further study of mathematics 3. To learn how to approach a mathematical problem in a logical, analytical manner 4. To help students gain a better appreciation for the field of mathematics 5. To use technology as an aid for learning mathematics and solving problems 6. To learn to communicate using appropriate mathematical terminology

Guidelines and Expectations:

1. You are expected to conduct yourself in a manner that is respectful to your class-mates, teacher and yourself. Remember your conduct towards others reflects who you are √ make sure it is a positive image. If you choose to behave in an inappropriate fashion there will be consequences.

2. You need to come to class prepared everyday. This includes your spiral notebook, textbook, at least 2 pencils, calculator and a positive attitude. If you are not, points will be deducted from your homework grade.

3. All turned in assignments must be done in pencil, neatly on loose-leaf paper and pledged or they will not be accepted. Yes, this does include test and quizzes! Remember when you pledge your assignment that means you have not given your work to another to copy or copied another student≠s work.

Absences -

Planned excused absence √ (trip, athletic event, etc.) you are expected to make arrangements with me in a timely fashion (i.e. Two days notice) before you leave √ otherwise you will receive a 0 for the assignments - this includes quizzes.

Unplanned excused absence- (you don≠t know ahead of time √ i.e. sick, or family emergency) you are expected to see me as soon as you return to make arrangements about your make-up work. Typically, for an unplanned absence you receive two days for every day absent to make up the work. If you miss a quiz your test covering that material divided by 10 will become your quiz grade.

Unexcused absence - you will receive a zero on any missed assignments.

Remember that if you are tardy 4 times in one quarter then you receive a detention.

Homework - Each day you must complete your homework assignment in a spiral notebook. Each assignment started on a new page with the assignment and date at the top. If your homework assignments are not in order you will not get credit for it. I will collect your spiral notebook on test days and your grade will deducted by two points for every missed assignment. If you come to class unprepared (this includes your homework assignment for the day) I will take points off of your homework grade as well. Your homework grade will be figured out of 55 points √ so if you are prepared everyday you will have 5 extra points.

Classwork/Projects/Participation - You will be given a few graded class/homework assignments and your are expected to participate productively in class. This will be for a total of 50 points. Classwork and Projects are to be completed on the sheet given or on loose leaf paper neatly in pencil or they will not be accepted.

Quizzes - You will have 11 quizzes per quarter √ 10 points each. They will occur every Friday/ last day of the week (with about 3 pop quizzes throughout the quarter). You will be allowed to drop your lowest quiz grade. Remember if you have a planned excused absence you must follow those guidelines or you will receive a 0. If you have an unplanned excused absence, the test covering that material will become your quiz grade. There will be no make-ups after the quiz is given to the class!

Test - You will have about 3 tests per quarter √ 100 points each. If you miss the day before a test you are not excused from taking the test. If you miss a test you must see me and make arrangements to take the test as soon as possible. If you know you are going to be absent you are responsible for seeing me before hand to make arrangements.

Quarter Evaluation: Homework grade - 55 pts Class/proj/part grade - 50 pts Quiz grades - 100 pts Tests (3 per quarter)- 300 pts Total 505 pts

To determine your grade √ take the points you have earned and divide by the total points possible.

On my part I will do my best to help you have a very successful school year. Please do not hesitate to ask for extra help if you need it or just stop by to say hi.
