History of Florida Links
This is a collection of links to sites on the history of the state of Florida. There is a special collection to sites on the history of South Florida and Miami.
South Florida History Links
Florida Division of Historical Resources This is the site of the government agency of the State of Florida responsible for preserving and promoting the history of Florida. Although at first glance this site may not look so useful for the researcher, if one looks carefully there are many good links here. If you are looking for something very specific, you might want to try a search here: http://dhr.dos.state.fl.us/fht/index2.html
Florida Memory Project This is the attempt of the Florida Bureau of Records and Archives Management to replicate, for the state of Florida, the American Memory site of the Library of Congress. This site is a good place to browse for information and search for primary sources for research: documents, videos, images, etc.
Florida Heritage Collection This is awesome! An effort of the State University System of Florida to digitize and make available texts about the history of, and life in Florida; this is basically an on-line library for Florida with matierals from the archives, special collections, and libraries of the State University System. The full text of many books and other sources are accessible here; in fact, the full text of the entire run of the Florida Historical Quarterly is available here. Given that this source exists, there is almost no excuse for being unable to find at least some information about almost any issue related to Florida.
Exploring Florida From the University of South Florida, this site contains thousands of documents, maps, photographs, and other resources on life in Floirda, in a variety of subject areas. The site is very well organized, and the documents are relatively easy to locate. There is also an excellent collection of links and a good bibliography. A very good site!
The Floridians: A Social History of Florida. This would be an excellent place to acquire some concise background information on a particular time period in the history of Florida. Be warned though that a fair number of the links do not work. The site is maintained by Professor Bob Leonard at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida.
UM Digital Collections The University of Miami is working to digitize several very rich collections of documents on a wide ranging variety of topics in the history of Florida, and South Florida in particular.
Kislak Foundation: Myths and Dreams This is an interesting site, mostly for the essays it contains, on the "cultural legacies of Florida and the Caribbean." There are also some interesting biographies, and a collection of links and resources, which is mediocre.
National Parks in Florida This page contains a map of Florida--click on any of the lands managed by the National Park Service to be taken directly to the specific website of the park. There is a lot of information on these sites, take a look. Click on the "In Depth" button (right side of page) once you get to the sites. (Note: You may have to use the refresh function on your browser after being taken to the respetive park sites).
Florida State Parks This site is not nearly as informative as the National Park Service site, but, if you are looking for information on state parks, this is the place to start. Depending on the park, there are some decent historical disucssions. Try http://www.floridastateparks.org/ if you prefer, same stuff, slightly different navigation.
Florida Newspapers This site contains links to most major and not so major dailies and magazines in Florida.
Spanish Florida.net This site is under construction; it does have some good information on missions and forts already. The content of the site should be evident from the title.
Keys Historium This site is largely the work of Jerry Wilkenson, a local historian in the Upper Keys. There are some nice images of artifacts, and plenty of articles here on various topics on Florida history.
Indian Tribes of North America This is an extract from a 1953 book by the same title. This page lists the Indian tribes of Florida, and has fairly extensive descriptions of the history and culture of the larger groups.
Florida Brigade This site details the experience of Floridians who fought in the Civil War, and gives a general sense of Florida's role in the Confederacy.
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society This sites celebrates the life and work of Florida's Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Yearling and other works. You can also find here the full texts of many of Rawlings works, as well as a number of her papers and correspondances.
FSA Photographs in Florida Assembled by the University of Miami from the Library of Congress' American Memory site, here you can see photographs from throughout Florida dating from the Great Depression. The images are categorized here by city.
New Deal Initiative (Florida) A website just beginning at Florida State University, this is an attempt to record the oral histories of those who expereinced the New Deal in Florida.
"America's Ancient City" This is an outstanding website on the history of St. Augustine. Reviewing this site will not only give you a sense of the history of the city, but also of the Spanish colonial period in Florida generally.
OldCity This is a pretty informative site about life in the city of St. Augustine, the oldest city of European origin in North America.
Castillo de San Marcos National Park Service site for the oldest European fort in North America, in St. Augustine, Florida.
Pensacola History Society This site is really not very good, as far as a place to find information. I have included it here becuase it does have a very good collection of links to site on the history of the Panhandle region.
Frontline: Saving Elian This is an excellent treatment of the Elian Gonzales case, which represents various perspectives and devles into a deeper discussion of the questions of exile and immigrants communities and the shaping of collective identity.
